Topher, Oh Topher

The company I work for treated all of us employees to a movie. They closed off three Ayala cinemas yesterday and another one today. I got to watch today’s screening of Spider-Man 3, complete with a bag of Holy Kettle Corn and a bottle of Pepsi Max that they so kindly supplied.

The movie wasn’t that good. Okay, it totally sucked, if you ask me. The producers did a good job on the first two but they totally butchered the story line for the third installment. The fight scenes were so-so, which is unacceptable for a comic book hero movie. The story dragged a bit and was a little too melodramatic. It was almost a musicale, at some point.

To give them credit, the actors played their roles well. Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst delivered stunning performances, as always. James Franco is gorgeous, and I wish that scene of him in his underwear lasted a wee bit longer. Yes, if I was MJ Watson, I’ll pick Harry Osborn over Peter Parker any day.

If you ask me, though, the movie’s best performance definitely goes to Topher Grace. Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket His role as bad guy Eddie Brock a.k.a. Venom is quite a leap from his usual wholesome roles, and I must say he played it very well. I’ve had a huge crush on Topher Grace since his days as Eric Forman in That 70’s Show. He’s gone a long way since then. Its funny that he’s playing Venom though, because I used to think he would’ve made a good Spider-Man. It really pissed me off how the movie downplayed Venom’s significance, considering that he’s Spider-Man’s real nemesis. But what do I know? Everything I know about Spider-Man, I learned in a video game.

Ah, Topher Grace. Whether you like it or not, you are now stuck on my phone’s main screen, condemned to smiling at me whenever I damned well please.

  1. Funny, but this time around, I agreed to go with the husband to the first-day screening here (the movie shows here on Friday, May 4, yet) solely because of Topher. Truth be told, I wasn’t keen on Tobey Maguire as Spidey from the very start.

    But that’s just me. :-)
